Mt Gox was over 10 years ago. Security way better now, but older generation remembers the horror stories

Must say yur mom's concerns aren't entirely unfounded. Crypto does have risks:

• - Exchange hacks (though rare now)
• - User error (lost keys, scams)
• - Volatility
• - Regulatory uncertainty

But with proper education and security practices, $500 investment is reasonable risk for someone your age
